From Virtual Cycling to Real-World Creativity: When Digital Therapeutics Truly Empower Seniors

Posted by Jessie Tan on 3 March 2026

Can digital brain training meaningfully transfer into real life? I had the privilege of watching how a carefully designed digital therapeutic could move beyond the screen and into real life.

During the clinical trials of NeeuroBike, I found my answer—in the most heartwarming way. Our goal was simple—but ambitious: help seniors build physical and cognitive resilience through structured, engaging training. What we didn’t expect was how deeply the experience would transfer into real life.

Using NeeuroBike, they cycled on a recumbent bike through familiar Singapore destinations, stopping at local-themed mini-games designed for brain training. 🧠🚴‍♀️ The experience blended physical movement, cognitive challenges, all in a friendly engaging way—designed to stimulate both mind and body through brain-computer interface (BCI) technology.

But here’s what truly stood out:

The transfer effect

In cognitive science, transfer effect refers to the ability to apply skills learned in one context to different, real-world situations. Demonstrating meaningful transfer—especially far transfer—has always been the gold standard for cognitive training.

Research on working memory training, such as N-back cognitive training, has shown evidence of transfer beyond the trained task itself (see: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6236237/).

In the clinical study, we examined how structured cognitive-physical training could translate beyond the training environment and into functional outcomes (see: https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05163769?tab=researcher).

At the end of the programme, one participant surprised us by hand-crafting miniature food models inspired by the game itself—nasi lemak, kueh, egg tarts, dim sum. These were not part of the training objectives. But it showed something powerful: Engagement, creativity, and motivation didn’t stop when the app did—they carried into real life. ✨

That moment stayed with us and reinforced why we design solutions this way. 💡

The Why Behind the Technology

Cognitive training should not feel clinical or intimidating. By anchoring experiences in familiar contexts, we empower seniors to see learning as continuous—not something that ends with age. That is the true impact of digital therapeutics: improving quality of life, not just cognitive scores.

If you’re exploring how technology can support healthy ageing, lifelong learning, and mental wellness, this is only the beginning of what’s possible.
