The Covid-19 pandemic that shook the whole world in 2020 has taken a great toll on the mental health of many. Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health conducted a study that revealed an elevated global prevalence of mental health issues during Covid-19, particularly on depression and anxiety.
Anxiety and Depression during the Pandemic
They found a 21% global prevalence of anxiety, with Asia having lower levels of anxiety at 18% compared to other regions of the world with 29%. The study noted that China had a lower prevalence of anxiety at 16% compared to all other countries at 26%.
Kaiser Family Foundation also published a study that showed people’s mental health has been greatly affected by the pandemic, together with the resulting economic recession.
About four in 10 adults in the US have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, with symptoms such as difficulty sleeping (36%) or eating (32%), increased alcohol consumption or substance use (12%), and worsening chronic conditions (12%) due to worry and stress over the pandemic.
Supporting Mental Health Issues
With the world’s public health and vulnerabilities becoming apparent due to the ongoing pandemic, governments, researchers, and scientists have been coming up with various solutions to address these. Dr. João Castaldelli-Maia, lead author of the Columbia University study, indicated that these results have “important implications for policymakers and show the urgent need for the healthcare sector to increase support now for prevention and early intervention of depression and anxiety.”
Thankfully, researchers have been doubling up on finding ways to address these mental health issues, with applications and solutions that will help alleviate anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions that may have been aggravated due to the global health crisis.
Why are emotions important to further study, monitor, and find solutions when merited?
Edutopia.org explains it clearly, saying “we need all of our emotions for thinking, problem-solving, and focused attention. We are neurobiologically wired, and to learn anything, our minds must be focused and our emotions need to ‘feel’ in balance. Emotional regulation is necessary so that we can remember, retrieve, transfer, and connect all new information to what we already know. When a continuous stream of negative emotions hijacks our frontal lobes, our brain’s architecture changes, leaving us in a heightened stress-response state where fear, anger, anxiety, frustration, and sadness take over our thinking, logical brains.”
Measuring Emotions using Electroencephalogram solutions
At Dalhousie University in Halifax, researchers have developed a smartphone app that can monitor a person’s mental health by measuring his/her emotions while talking or typing on their phones. The app is able to measure whether one is depressed or anxious.
Measuring emotions can be highly complex, and there have been innovative startups that have been working very hard to use technology, beyond simple applications, such as using EEG solutions, to address these issues, including brain training leading to a more balanced state of mental health, helping one maintain overall health and wellness.
Using Electroencephalogram (EEG) Solutions to Address Mental Health
Thus, while weaving through various emotions brought about by the uncertainties of the global health crisis, it may be helpful to consider electroencephalogram (EEG) solutions to help us manage these emotions, especially the prevalence of anxiety and depression.
Neeuro’s Galini is a measurable stress management solution, carefully tailored to provide one with optimal relaxation and mindfulness. When supplemented with a SenzeBand, Neeuro’s revolutionary headband capable of measuring and tracking one’s attention, focus, mental workload, and relaxation levels,
Galini actively responds to your unique EEG signals to ensure that individual elements in your exercises adapt accordingly to achieve the best results for you. Peek into your own state of mind, recognize the patterns in your path to relaxation, mood, and mindfulness, and be on your way to successfully deal with anxiety and depression.
