A New Approach to Supporting Brain Health in Older Adults - Report on an Experience Session at a Tokyo Welfare Facility

Written by Misaki Ikemoto | 7 November 2025

As Japan faces one of the fastest-aging populations in the world, maintaining both physical and mental health among the elderly has become a pressing national issue.
To help seniors sustain their ability to live independently, it is not only physical fitness but also cognitive vitality—thinking, reasoning, and decision-making—that must be strengthened.

Against this backdrop, a welfare facility in Tokyo recently hosted a hands-on workshop where participants could visualize and train their brain activity in real time.
This article explores the social significance and future potential of such brain training programs, based on feedback and survey results from the event.

1.Rising Interest in Brain Training Among Japan’s Elderly

With Japan’s aging rate continuing to rise, efforts to maintain not just physical but also cognitive health are gaining strong attention nationwide.

In May 2025, a welfare facility in Tokyo collaborated to host a brain health training session using the wearable EEG device Neeuro SenzeBand2 and its connected app.

Following the instructor’s guidance, participants wore the headband-shaped device and linked it to a tablet. They then took part in four engaging games designed to train focus and memory while viewing their brain activity in real time on the screen.

After completing the session, participants recorded their scores and results on paper and received brief feedback about their brain performance.

Survey results showed that nearly 90% of participants felt a strong need for brain training in daily life. Many commented that they “often” or “frequently” feel the importance of keeping their brains active—revealing a high level of awareness toward age-related changes.

This suggests that seniors are actively seeking opportunities to “use their brains.”
Unlike traditional paper-based exercises, the digital program allows them to train their cognitive functions in an enjoyable, game-like format.

2.Technology Makes Brain Training Simple and Enjoyable

Post-event surveys revealed that around 80% of participants found the system easy to use and that the instructor’s explanations were clear.
This demonstrates that even among older adults—who are often perceived as less comfortable with digital tools—technology can be smoothly integrated when designed intuitively.

Many also commented that the training was “fun” and “an interesting new experience,” showing that the program functions not as a “lesson,” but as a form of entertainment.

More than half of participants (56%) said they felt that “their concentration could improve through this training.”
These responses indicate that brain training can bring a positive sense of enjoyment and purpose into daily life, creating valuable “moments of focus” and “mental stimulation.”

3.Encouraging Voluntary and Continuous Participation

An impressive 90% of participants said they would like to join again, and around 80% stated they would recommend the program to family and friends.
This shows that the program’s design encourages ongoing engagement rather than a one-time experience.

In the open-ended feedback section, participants wrote comments such as “I hope this continues regularly” and “Next time, I want to try a more advanced level.”
These responses suggest that the program enables participants to experience the joy of learning and self-driven improvement, rather than passive participation.

Encouraging seniors to join voluntarily and continue their own is considered one of the most effective approaches for promoting both mental and physical well-being.
Such initiatives can also foster a sense of purpose, community participation, and digital inclusion in elderly care facilities.

This initiative carries significance beyond individual training—it also represents a step forward in digital inclusion in Japan.
By using tablets and wearable devices, seniors are not only engaging their brains but also bridging generational and digital divides.

Looking ahead, the data gathered from such activities could help develop more personalized programs tailored to each individual’s cognitive profile and goals.

When seniors can “enjoy using their brains,” this joy becomes a key to extending healthy lifespans and revitalizing local communities.
The Tokyo workshop stands as a meaningful first step toward realizing that vision.

5.Neeuro’s Commitment to Brain Health

Actively engaging the brain in daily life is essential for seniors to maintain fulfillment and vitality.
Neeuro provides scientifically validated digital brain training solutions designed to make this both accessible and sustainable.

NeeuroFIT is a tablet-based program that trains focus, decision-making, and memory through interactive exercises.
In combination with the Neeuro SenzeBand2 , EEG headband, users can visualize their brain activity in real time and learn how to reach optimal focus levels at their own pace.

By incorporating such tools, older adults can develop a habit of “moving their minds while having fun,” supporting emotional wellness and a higher quality of life.
